Grant Application Information

Completed applications should be mailed to:

Medical Research Review Committee
The Hearing Foundation of Canada
20 Bay Street, 11th floor
Toronto, ON   M5J 2N8

Eligibility

The Hearing Foundation of Canada (THFC) supports new research initiatives that have scientific merit, particularly those from young investigators. The primary purpose of the research funding is to support operating expenses rather than capital equipment. At this time, our focus is on biological and clinical research projects.

A maximum of $25,000 in non-renewable grant funding may be awarded to a Canadian-based research project for a period of one year.

Funding Guidelines

1.   Proposals for research funding must pertain to the cause, prevention, intervention and cure for hearing loss. Both basic and clinical research proposals will be considered.

2.   The Hearing Foundation encourages interdisciplinary collaboration. Proposals for projects that include scientific work done by collaborators who are not co-investigators must include a letter of agreement to collaborate.

3.   Consideration will be given to applications both with and without institutional affiliations.

4.   The Hearing Foundation requires a letter of approval by the appropriate Ethics Committee for research involving human or animal experimentation, or clinical examination as set out by the Canadian Council on Animal Care.

5.   Grant funds may be used for research, post-doctoral and trainee salaries, reagents, supplies and so forth, and may cover costs for equipment only as necessary to the project.

Ineligible requests

1.   Applicants requesting funds for institutional overhead, indirect costs or other organizational levies, will not be considered.

2.   Incomplete proposals, those that exceed 5 pages (not including attachments), or proposals not conforming to the stipulated format will not be considered.

3.   Proposals for funding of research already funded by another granting source will not be considered. Note that it is the grantee's responsibility to inform THFC of subsequent funding another granting source of any portion of the research identified in the grant application

4.   Applications from for-profit organizations are ineligible for grants, and will not be considered.

Application Guidelines

1.   Applications should be in narrative form and no longer than five (5) single spaced typewritten pages in length. Two additional pages of attachments containing other supportive data, such as figures are acceptable, but must be relevant to the proposal.

2.   The proposal must be typed, with text in a 12 pt. font at a minimum, single-spaced and with 2 cm margins.

3.   Principal Investigators (PI) are to complete page 1 of the application, and this will serve as the cover sheet. The PI name must be included at the top right of EVERY page

4.   Each Co-Investigator (Co-PCI) must fill out a page 2 cover sheet

5.   Completed CV forms (pages 4 & 5) for all research personnel must be attached.

6.   Although we do not require a detailed budget, a summary of anticipated costs is required. Funding is for one year only.

7.    Eight (8) copies of the complete proposal must be submitted.

Timelines

Please note, we are in the process of reviewing our granting process, and therefore will not be accepting any new applications until further notice.

The deadline for applications is August 31 of each year.  Successful grants will be announced in March of the following year.

Funds will be disbursed following the decision and announcement, and grantees are required to file a summary report at the end of the research granting year (i.e., March of the following year).

It is expected that the results of research funded by THFC will be published in high quality journals and will be accessible to THFC and other members of the research community. Grantees’ written permissions must be given to THFC to allow the organization to refer to both the research project and the researchers in THFC's public education communications, which may include press releases, web site story, newsletters, print articles, PSA's, direct mail and telemarketing.

Administration of Funds

A third party financial manager at the host research institution must administer grant funds for successful projects.

A financial statement, either interim or final, from the applicant's institution is requested upon completion of the project.

Grants are not transferable. THFC has the right to terminate a grant if the researcher relocates to another institution.
